Calgary revels in provinces rideshare rules – MetroNews Canada


Canada Day party hopping just got cheaper – but for Calgarians still waiting for Uber to go live – don’t hold your breath.

On Tuesday, the provincial government unveiled their promised revisions to regulate ride-hailing companies like Uber and TappCar, along with an insurance solution to help those eyeing transportation network companies hop on for the ride in an affordable fashion.

The insurance product is set to go live July 1, and become a comprehensive coverage plan from the minute users log on to their smartphone apps. It is an added layer of coverage for drivers who are looking for passengers should they get in an accident, and another layer of protection once the driver has a passenger.

According to chief livery inspector Mario Henriques, Calgary’s rideshare rules will, for the most part, stand up next to the provinces regulations.

“We are very pleased with the response by the province to the TNC’s entry into the market,” Henriques said. “We don’t see the need to make any significant revisions to our bylaw…there’s a great synergy between the province’s laws and ours.”

Many transportation network companies working on applications with the City of Calgary have been waiting for this insurance solution to evaluate if their service model and the city’s regulations will make business viable.

It’s not likely Calgary will see the market flooded with TNC options by Stampede because of the tight deadline including police checks.

The city has also been in talks with Uber for two weeks about re-entry according to Henriques, but they still aren’t licensed in Calgary, and kept mum on any details when Metro asked.

“We recognize the steps taken by the Alberta government and we will be reviewing the newly approved ridesharing insurance policy and other announced rules,” read a statement from Uber spokesman Jean-Christophe de Le Rue. “We’ll have more to share soon.”

The province’s rules outline that drivers must have specific police background checks including a vulnerable section check, class 1 2 or 4 licence, and insurance requirements for drivers.
