EAST LANSING, MI – East Lansing police are investigating two, similar reports of criminal sexual conduct involving drivers with a rideshare service.
In both cases, a driver made “unwelcome sexual advances” toward a female Michigan State University student picked up near downtown East Lansing, according to a statement from the police department.
The detective bureau is continuing to investigate.
Police would like to make sure the public knows rideshare services do not undergo the same regulatory procedures as traditional taxi companies. Such services connect paying passengers with drivers who provide transportation in their own non-commercial vehicles.
Community members should be cautions when riding with strangers and always consider riding with a friend, according to the statement.
Police are not releasing further details.
If anyone else believes they have been victimized, they are encouraged to contact the police department at 517-351-4220.
